We propose yet another wireless ATM protocol called Packet Queueing Multiple Access (PQMA) as an example to handle the intricate relationship among the aspects of accessing, error control and rate control for multimedia communications. For access and rate control, we favor the use of explicit scheduling and acknowledgement. For error control, we examine the use of various ARQ and FEC codes including turbo codes and sparse codes.
Recently, there is a lot of interest in the use of spatial and spectral diversity for handling fading. The SOVA algorithm for turbo decoding allows for a simple iterative joint channel and codeword estimation for multiple channels with fading. The use of Bayesian network for decoding sparse code also lends itself to simple joint channel and codeword estimation.
Time permitting, I shall also describe an implementation of the Wireless Campus project.
